Various Screencasts (Eclipse Java Debugger, CDT, Qt Installation, Tutorials)

Preparing for the new semester, I created a few screencast videos for various tutorials:
1. Eclipse Java Debugger tutorial (about 60 minutes): Students in COMP SCI 257 Software Design II should start using Eclipse Debugger, and this video explains how to use it, with the syllable counter example in Horstmann’s Chapter 6.
2. Installations of JDK, Eclipse, [...]

Couldn’t skip this…

Another interesting article on Slashdot today.

You may find the comments more interesting, but there areĀ  a lot.

Why Don’t We Read So Well on Screen

An interesting article about the title, delivered today through ACM Technews:
I’m in a bit sorry that I suggested e-book options in my courses this semester, but I also think we can’t ignore the economy factor… I’ll probably not recommend e-book options in my future courses. That’s not entirely due to this article, but also [...]

Interesting articles from Slashdot about CS education

Today, two articles from Slashdot caught my eyes:

Discrete Math I Lecture on Thanksgiving Eve (11/26/2008)

Even with the fear I mentioned in my last post, I keep doing this. Here’s the recording of today’s lecture for those who had to leave early for the holiday:
Sorry about inconsistency of my voice. I kept moving away from the internal microphone, so there are many frequently fading voices. I think I should [...]

Video lecture of divisibility proofs using mathematical induction (Discrete Math I)

Here’re the links to the video I mentioned in the email:
Click here for the first example.
Click here for the second example.
Use these video lectures for studying and solving the homework problems.

Java Swing GUI Programming Lecture Using Vending Machine Example

This is the recording of Java Swing GUI programming guide. As mentioned in class, it uses the Vending Machine example we’ve worked on. The link is as follows:
I’m afraid the recording is not very satisfactory. It seems there’s some issue of audio-video sync. I’ll need to present a summary of this video in class [...]

Eclipse tutorial lecture

This is the recording of a part of today’s (10/30/2008) COMP SCI 256 lecture explaining how to use Eclipse for the beginning Java developers.

I don’t know why, but I had some trouble playing the video with my Firefox, but didn’t with Internet Explorer. If you have the same issue with your Firefox, try IE.
Again, if [...]

Virtual Machine Again, This Time, With Sun’s VirtualBox

In a previous post of mine, I talked about using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to install a Linux distro on a Windows PC. I mentioned that recent distros (like Ubuntu 8.04 or Fedora 9) couldn’t be installed on MS VPC 2007, so I had to try the one I succeeded before–Fedora Core 4. Meanwhile, I [...]

How to Use Classroom Presenter

I use a software called Classroom Presenter (created by Univ. Washingon-Seatttle Computer Science and Engineering) for presenting my lecture slides to projected screens. Refer to the web site for the features. I needed to post the instructions for the software, as it’s not just a single-click. I thought it’d be a good idea to post [...]
